Fix Your Cracked Tooth in Just One Visit
A cracked tooth can usually be repaired in just one visit. The procedure doesn’t take very long and we’ll have your tooth restored quickly.
Treatment of a Fractured or Cracked Tooth
A cracked tooth will first require an in depth dental exam by our dentist to learn more about the severity of your tooth problem. In addition to the in depth exam, you will tell our dentist (Dr. Jabbour) about any pain that you’re experiencing with the tooth – along with any other symptoms.
Depending on how severely your tooth is fractured along with your overall oral health and symptoms, Dr. Jabbour will come up with a treatment plan for repairing the crack.
Repairing a Crack with a Crown or Root Canal
In many cases, we will be able to repair your tooth. Placement of a dental crown with a filling can often times effectively repair the crack in your tooth. In more extreme cases, the crack may have allowed an infection to occur. In these cases, Dr. Jabbour may recommend a root canal in order to preserve the toot.
Beyond Repair: Tooth Extraction and Tooth Replacement
Unfortunately, there are some cases where it is clear that a crown or root canal therapy will be unable to fully repair your tooth. In these cases, a tooth extraction may be recommended.
Once you have a missing tooth, it is essential to replace that missing tooth. Not doing so can lead to a weakened jawbone and even additional tooth loss. We usually recommend a dental implant to replace a missing tooth. A dental implant is able to stabilize your jawbone and mitigate the effects of a tooth extraction on nearby teeth.
How Did My Broken Tooth Become Cracked?
There are many ways in which a tooth can become cracked.
Age
Age is a major contributing factor as teeth naturally become worn down over time.
Eating Hard Items
Chewing on hard foods like ice can accelerate this process. Even biting down on your fingernails can cause problems with your teeth.
Teeth Grinding
Many people may not even be aware of the dangers posed by grinding your teeth (bruxism). Teeth grinding can result in a cracked tooth over time, as well as other serious conditions like temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ). The good news is that grinding can usually be effectively treated with the use of a night mouth guard.
Preventing Cracked Teeth
Diet
Proper diet can ensure that you get the nutrients you need and can help to slow down this process. Avoid foods with high sugar content as these foods interact with the bacteria in your mouth. Their interaction creates an acid that deteriorates your tooth enamel and can lead to serious dental problems.
Avoid biting down on hard items and inedible items (like fingernails).
Dental Hygiene
Good dental hygiene can also help to prevent conditions which may lead to a cracked tooth dental emergency. Come into our dental office for regular checkups. We’ll perform a comprehensive exam to help to identify potential problem spots before they become full blown emergencies. You’ll also receive a teeth cleaning to remove plaque and tarter which can result in tooth decay – and eventually a severely damaged tooth when not treated.
